The 2021 Extreme E Championship is set to be the first round of the Extreme E Championship, an electrically powered off-road racing series that will be staged across the globe.[1] The series will feature a group of identical of Spark Racing Technologies Odyssey 21s, racing across some of the World's most ecologically diverse regions in an effort to highlight climate change.[1][2][3]

Background[]

The concept of Extreme E first arose in late 2017, when Formula E Holdings, the owners of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, began investigations into an off-road racing series.[1] The result was a Dakar style series named Extreme E, which was launched on the 31 January 2019 by Alejandro Agag and Gil de Ferran with an aim to highlight the impact of climate change.[1] The new series would use a chassis built by Spark Racing Technologies, use tyres from Continental, and use powertrains based off those used in the FE Championship, albeit with increased power outputs.[1][2][4]

Driver Developments[]

In September 2019 it was announced that Extreme E would launch a Drivers' Programme to tempt drivers to join the series, having signed up eleven drivers from Formula E, the FIA World Rallycross Championship, the World Rally Championship and various other sources.[5] This followed the announcement of three initial entrants to the series, with FIA Formula E entrants Venturi, HWA Racelab and ABT Sportsline all announcing their intent to compete in XE in July 2019.[6]

Calendar[]

The first round of the 2021 Extreme E Championship was unveiled in September 2019, with a deal to race in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland signed by XE.[7] Subsequent deals followed with Saudi Arabia, Nepal and Brazil, before the five round schedule was concluded with a deal with Senegal.[8] The concept of the racing in five diverse regions would show how climate change has affected the globe, with each race effectively having its own theme.[9]

Experimental Endeavours[]

The first provisional calendar for XE was unveiled on 17 December 2019, with the season opening with the Ocean Stage in Senegal, between 22-24 January 2021.[9] The Desert Stage in Saudi Arabia would follow in early March, before a trip to Nepal for the Mountain Stage in May.[9] The series would then head around the world to Greenland for the Arctic Stage, ahead of the series finale in Brazil with the Amazon Stage on 29-31 October 2021.[9]

Covid Compliance[]

The Covid-19 Pandemic would interrupt the initial plans for the XE Championship, however, with the season delayed until the Spring of 2021, meaning the 2021 Ocean X-Prix was delayed until late May.[10] The 2021 Desert X-Prix hence became the opening round, but was pushed back until the 3-4 April 2021, while the round in Nepal was cancelled due to travel restrictions.[10] Its place on the calendar was instead taken by the 2021 Glacier X-Prix in Argentina, which was scheduled for the 11-12 December as the final round of the inaugural EX campaign.[10]

Drivers' Programme[]

Before the formal announcement of teams and drivers, the organisers of the XE Championship arranged a "Drivers' Programme" to effectively test drivers for the series.[5] Various drivers, including several who were competing in the FIA Formula E Championship, would sign up for the Drivers' Programme, which would induct several more drivers in 2019 and 2020.[5] Participation in the Programme was not required to secure a seat in the 2021 edition of the XE Championship.[5]
