The Berlin E-Prix is an annual motorsports event that serves as a round of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, having been staged since the inaugural 2014/15 season.[1] Usually held at the Tempelhofring, a temporary street circuit in the legendary Tempelhof airport, Berlin has hosted twelve E-Prix, making it the most staged E-Prix in FE history.[2]

During the 2019/20 season the Berlin E-Prix was selected to host the final part of the campaign, after the season was heavily impacted by the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic.[3][4] A six race schedule was revealed, with three alternate versions of the Tempelhofring used across nine days.[4]

City History[]

Berlin was first settled in 1192, when the earliest evidence of settlement in the city can be found.[5] The city itself was established in 1237, with two towns that gradually merged together over the thirteenth century.[5] Berlin became the capital of the local region in the fifteenth century, before becoming the basis of power in Prussia in the seventeenth century.[5] The German Empire was later centred on Berlin in 1871, with city remaining as the capital after the second world war (for both the Federal and People's Republics of Germany) and the reunified Germany formed in 1989.[5]

Formula E History[]

Berlin was announced as a host city as part of the original, provisional, calendar on the 11 July 2013, as the penultimate round of the season.[6] The inclusion of Moscow in early 2015 meant that Berlin was moved to the eighth round, and pushed a week forward to allow enough time to get the equipment to Russia in time.[6]

Circuit History[]

Berlin Layout

Tempelhof Airport's original layout.

The circuit was revealed on the 24 February, 2015, with the ePrix itself held on the 23 May.[7] Having raced around Tempelhof Airport, sight of the legendary Berlin Airlift, Jérôme d'Ambrosio became the first winner of the Berlin ePrix, after Lucas di Grassi was excluded from the result after using an illegal front wing.[8]

Allee Alterations: 2016[]

After the Refugee Crisis of 2016 saw Tempelhof turned into a refugee centre, a new area for the Berlin ePrix was needed.[9] Karl-Marx-Allee was proposed, and quick and effective negotiations saw a new circuit constructed in the heart of Berlin, with the new circuit approved by the FIA and all eighteen drivers.[9] Victory went to Sébastien Buemi, who battled his way to victory, while title rival Lucas di Grassi had to battle up to the podium from eighth.[10]

Tempelhof Temptations: 2017 - Present[]

Tempelhof Airport would return as host of the Berlin ePrix for the 2016/17 season, with a brand new layout proposed to better suit the series.[11] It would also be the first time that Berlin hosted two races as part of a single Formula E campaign, after the first proposed Brussels ePrix was cancelled after issues organising a venue.[12] The Tempelhofring was subsequently used to host the Berlin E-Prix in the 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons.[13]

After the 2020 Covid-19 Pandemic caused major changes to the 2019/20 season calendar, the Tempelhofring was chosen to host the final six rounds of the season.[4] To do so the races were split off into pairs, with three versions of the Tempelhofring planned to host each of the paired E-Prix.[4] The first races would be held on a reversed Tempelhofring, the second pair on the standard anti-clockwise layout, while the third pair of races were to be held on an alternate layout.[4]

Temporary Tuning: 2020[]

The third pair of Berlin E-Prix during 2019/20 would be held on a variation of the Tempelhofring, alternately dubbed as the "New Berlin E-Prix Circuit" or Tempelhofer Park.[4] The changes were centred on adding six corners to the middle sector, extending the circuit to 2.505 km (1.557 mi), while sectors one and two were unchanged.[4]

Circuit Layouts[]

The original Berlin ePrix circuit featured seventeen corners over a distance of 2.47 km (1.53 mi), held inside the "apron" of Tempelhof Airport in the centre of Berlin.[6] Containing a mixture of hairpins, chicanes and long sweeping corners, the Spark-Renault SRT_01E was pushed to its limits, as were the drivers.[1]

Karl-Marx-Allee Circuit[]

Berlin Layout 2016

The Karl-Marx-Allee attempt at an ePrix.

The Karl-Marx-Allee Circuit would be a different take on circuit design, with three hairpin turns centred around a round-about at the end of Karl-Marx-Allee.[9] The pits were down a separate road, entry and exit either side of the turn one hairpin, with the lap running anti-clockwise around central Berlin.[9]

Tempelhofring 2017[]

A whole new circuit layout was proposed for Tempelhof Airport's return in 2017, with fewer corners but very few straights of note.[14] The lap opens with a sweeping, tightening, left hand curve, turning the field through 270° before a double 90° rights of turns two and three.[14] A short straight follows before the field brake for a hairpin left of turn four, with turn five forming a kink onto the back straight and the end of the first sector.[14]

After a long drag the circuit opens out into turn the hairpin left of turn six, with the Attack Mode activation zone located on the outside of the hairpin.[14] A shallow curve then fend the cars into the left hand sweep of turn seven, with turn following immediately after to complete sector two.[14] A short straight then carries the field into a hairpin right at turn nine, with the final short sprint into a hairpin left of turn ten leads the field back onto the start/finish "straight".[14]
