The Brooklyn Street Circuit is a temporary street circuit formed in the Red Hook district of Brooklyn, New York City, that hosts the annual New York City E-Prix.[1] First used to host two rounds of the 2016/17 ABB FIA Formula E Championship, the Brooklyn Circuit has hosted all six E-Prix to be held in New York, and has received one major revision to its layout.[2]

Formula E History

The New York City E-Prix was first announced as the final round of the 2016/17 season, after lengthy negotiations between city officials and Formula E Holdings that had seen an initial agreement reached in March 2014.[3][1] The calendar was subsequently modified during the season, resulting in Montreal becoming the final round, while an area for the New York E-Prix was carefully picked.[1] The eventual area chosen was the Red Hook district within Brooklyn, with the circuit intended to be laid out within the docks at Pier 11.[4]

Circuit History

Various initial circuit designs were created for the inaugural New York City ePrix, with the final design eventually formalised a few weeks before the race.[4] The circuit duly hosted two New York ePrix in 2017, before plans to expand the circuit were put in place after FE revealed their plans for a new car, the Spark SRT05e, which promised more performance.[2] A new complex was added to replace the turn thirteen hairpin, resulting in the Allianz eVillage being moved to the opposite side of the circuit.[2]

Further revisions were made ahead of the 2019 race, with the pit complex moved to start straight.[5]

Circuit Layouts

There have been two distinct layouts for the Brooklyn Street Circuit since its first race in 2017.

2017 Layout - 1.947km (1.210mi)

New York Layout 2017

The 2017 layout of the Brooklyn Street Circuit.

A lap of the circuit began with a short blast along the finish straight, before a heavy braking point to enter a narrow right-hand hairpin.[4] A bumpy straight followed to carry the field into turn two, a 90° right, before another short blast to the turn three/four hairpin, a right-left combination.[4] The most difficult corner on the circuit followed, a long, sweeping left taken with a brief lift of the throttle, before the field exited onto the starting straight.[4]

A long blast carried the field into turn six, a hairpin right, before another long straight in the opposite direction.[4] Turns seven and eight formed a chicane/hairpin combo, a 90° left followed by a hairpin right, before the field began the charge back to the finish line via a kink formed turn nine.[4] Pit-in came halfway along that run, before a 90° left formed turn ten to bring the field back onto the finish straight.[4]

2018 - Present layout - 2.374 km (1.475 mi)

The 2018 layout of the Brooklyn Street Circuit was near identical to the original layout, barring the addition of a new complex to replace the turn six hairpin.[2] The new complex saw the field complete a hairpin-esque left, immediately followed by a 90° right.[2] Another pair of 90° right-hand turns followed, before the field exit the complex with a long apex right to bring them back onto the back-straight.[2]

The circuit was further refined for the 2019 race, with the pit complex and finish/timing line moved onto the start straight.[5] The update also added the Attack Mode activation zone to the circuit, located on the inside of the exit of the newly renumbered turn five.[5]
