The Circuit des Invalides is a temporary street circuit established in the grounds of the Hôtel des Invalides in Paris, France, that serves as the host of the annual Paris E-Prix.[1] The Invalides circuit has hosted the ABB FIA Formula E Championship since the series' maiden visit to the French capital, after the city joined the calendar ahead of the 2015/16 season.[1]

Formula E History

Les Invalides quickly emerged as the host of the Paris ePrix during the 2015/16 season, fulfilling the FIA's hopes to centre the race closer to Paris' most iconic monument, the Eifel Tower.[1] The grounds around the city's military museum, which include the tomb of Napoleon, provided ample room for the Formula E series, with a circuit based around the palace itself, with only minor disruption to the city as a result.[1] In terms of the race, Les Invalides would see Lucas di Grassi snatch a win for the German ABT Schaeffler Audi Sport, beating home favourites Renault e.Dams.[2]

Les Invalides would return in 2016/17, hosting the 2017 Paris ePrix with funding from Qatar Airways.[3] This time, it would be e.Dams' lead driver Sébastien Buemi who claimed victory, although Parisian born Jean-Éric Vergne would challenge throughout.[3]

Circuit History

Circuit Layout

A clockwise running circuit was constructed right around the former Palace, with the pitlane entry and exit both centred on the 180° turn 12, ahead of the start/finish straight.[4] The circuit itself started with a 90° right hander, before an extended chicane was formed from turns two, three, four and five.[4] Turn six was simply a kink into a hairpin turn seven, which opened out onto another of the palace's boulevards.[4]

A long blast down the second boulevard was to be followed by a stamp on the brakes for the 90° turn eight.[4] The turn nine kink carried the cars to another 90° corner, before the pit entry/exit formed from turns eleven, twelve and thirteen, which arced around a small plaza.[4] Another kink then led the cars into a right hand bend, before opening out onto the start/finish straight to complete the tour.[4]
