Fabio Leimer (born 17 April 1989) is a Swiss born racing driver, who tested for Amlin Aguri at the 2014 Donington Test on the second, third and fourth days.[1] Leimer was not, however, called upon when the 2014/15 FIA Formula E Championship started at the 2014 Beijing ePrix, instead focusing on his other commitments for the season.
However, when Jaime Alguersuari had his racing license withheld just before the 2015 London ePrix I, Virgin Racing invited Leimer to drive for them at the season finale in London.[2] Unfortunately for the Swiss racer the London double header would not go well, leaving Leimer without a drive for the 2015/16 season.
Background
Leimer's career began in karting, competing in the Swiss Karting Championship from 2003, before a first opportunity came to drive cars in 2006.[3] Entering Formula BMW ADAC with Team Rosberg in Germany, Leimer took eighteenth in the standings, scoring four points.[3] Formula Renault followed in 2007, with Leimer entering the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship, as well as the Italian Formula Renault 2.0 Championship for the season, although neither proved particularly fruitful.[3]
Formula Ambitions
Leimer opted to take on the International Formula Master Championship in 2008, supported by his team from Formula Renault.[3] Three wins throughout the season saw him take second in the championship in his debut year, prompting him to stay in the series for a second season.[3] His choice was well rewarded, with six wins taking him to the title, including a notable victory in Belgium in support of the 2009 Belgian Grand Prix.[3]
2010 gave Leimer the chance to drive in the GP2 Series, with Ocean Racing Technology offering him the drive in March of that year.[3] After competing at the end of the 2009-10 GP2 Asia Series with the team, Leimer took his first victory in the full championship in the first sprint race in support of the 2010 Spanish Grand Prix , although glory was hard to come by for the rest of the season.[3] In 2011, Leimer changed teams, with the change of scenery seeing him take victory once more in Barcleona, and also at the feature race in Yas Marina at the Season Finale.[3]
After moving to Racing Engineering for 2012 (and the 2011 Season Finale), Leimer failed to win a race all season, although he did become a frequent point scorer.[3] He followed this with a strong 2013 performance, taking three feature race wins on his way to the title, hoping to gain a Formula One drive as his prize.[3] Although rumours emerged about him and F1, no chance came, and Leimer opted not to defend his crown in 2014.[3]
Rebellion and Racing
Leimer was approached by the Rebellion Racing team to test for them for the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2014, appearing at the 'Prologue' in March.[3] Driving the #13 car, Leimer and his team mates struggled throughout the season. retiring from five events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.[3] By the end of the season, Leimer's team had become consistent point scorers, although their final tally of 19 left them in 17th overall.[3]
Leimer had attempted to join Team Mugen in the 2015 Super Formula Championship in Japan, although in March 2015 Mugen announced that his contract had been terminated.[3]
Formula E History
Leimer was given the chance to test the Spark-Renault SRT_01E at the 2014 Donington Test by Amlin Aguri, after António Félix da Costa was forced to depart due to other commitments.[4] After three days of running, Leimer completed 118 laps of the Donington Park circuit, achieving a best time of 1:33.792.[4] Although da Costa missed the first ePrix in Beijing, Leimer was not called upon to race for the team.
His chance came, however, when Jaime Alguersuari was temporarily suspended by the FIA after a health scare at the 2015 Moscow ePrix.[5] Virgin Racing asked Leimer to compete for them at the season finale in London, although his debut did not go particularly well, as he crashed out of the second race.[6]
