Dorna Sports SL, better known simply as Dorna is a Spanish sports management and marketing company, based in Madrid, Spain.[1] Owned by Bridgepoint Capital after being sold by CVC Madrid in 2005, Dorna are well known as the commercial rights holders for the MotoGP Series, a role they have held since 1992.[1]

As a result of their control of the MotoGP Series, Dorna and MotoGP organisers the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme worked together to create the FIM MotoE World Cup, an all-electric motorcycle racing series.[2]

Background[]

Dorna was originally founded in Madrid, Spain, in 1988, working as a sports management and marketing firm.[1] In 1991 the group secured all of the commercial and TV rights to the FIM Road Racing Works Championship Grand Prix, before taking over control of the series from the FIM in 1993.[1] In 1998 Dorna was taken over by CVC Madrid, a subsidiary of CVC Capital Partners, and officially renamed as Dorna Sports SL, resulting in a new wave of investment in the FIM Grand Prix scene.[1]

GPs and Superbikes[]

Dorna, throughout its early years as the promoters of the FIM Grand Prix series worked hard to improve relations with manufacturers.[1] In 2002 this would result in the creation of the MotoGP Series, with regulations controlled by the MSMA (manufacturers association) rather than the FIM.[1] There would also be a gentleman's agreement with FOM, owners of the commercial rights to the FIA Formula One World Championship to avoid staging races at the same time.[1]

MotoGP would grow to become the biggest sport in Dorna's portfolio, with the firm also securing rights to World Supercross and, in 2013, World Superbikes, MotoGPs major competitors.[3] As a result Dorna hold the rights to all of the major international motorcycle racing series, with Dorna also responsible for creation Moto2 and Moto3 to support MotoGP and promote young talent.[1]

MotoE History[]

Dorna began investigations into holding an all-electric motorcycle Championship in late 2016, working alongside the FIM.[2] The pair duly announced the FIM MotoE World Cup on 6 February 2018, with Dorna also securing a title sponsor for the new series in the form of Enel.[2] Dorna duly took over the responsibility of securing entries for the new series as the FIM solidified the rulebook, with various incentives sent to entrants in MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 to get them on-board.[2]

Products[]

Dorna act as the commercial rights holders of the FIM MotoE World Cup and hence produce no products of note.
