The Haitang Bay Circuit, also known unofficially as the Sanya Street Circuit, is a temporary street circuit that hosted the Sanya E-Prix, a round of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. Located in Sanya on Hainan Island, China, the Haitang Bay Circuit hosted its only E-Prix on 23 March 2019, a race won by Jean-Éric Vergne.
Formula E History
The Haitang Bay Circuit's first proposed layout was not modified ahead of its debut, although there would be a late decision to modify the track surface. The change was made after high temperatures at the Santiago E-Prix had caused the track surface to break up, with a resin based solution created to treat the Haitang Bay Circuit was a precaution.
A lap of the Haitang Bay Circuit opened with a 90° left hand corner, with a short straight following to lead the field into turn two, an oblique left. The pit-exit was found halfway down the straight out of turn two, before the field hit the brakes for turn three, a 90° left with the Attack Mode activation point on the outside of the corner. Turn four was a dual apex right, turning the field through almost 180°, leading them out onto a straight.
Turn five arrived in the form of a hairpin left, with turn six leading the field onto the back straight along the main road and over the River. A slight curve formed turn seven before a hairpin left required the field to brake heavily, putting the field onto the opposite side of the bridge. Turn nine was a sweeping right to bring the field onto the starting straight, with another heavy braking point at the end for turn ten, a 90° right.
Exiting turn ten the field would weave through a shallow chicane, before another quick blast to the final corner, a hairpin-esque left. That brought the field back on the finish straight via a kink, with pit-in located on the entry to the final corner.
