Tung's career began in 1997, when he entered his first kart race in Holland. Through the early 2000s, Tung competed in numerous Formula Ford championships, before winning the Formula BMW Asia championship in 2003, earning him a test in a Willams F1 car. From 2004 until 2006, Tung competed in the German Formula 3 series, claiming the title on his third attempt. Four seasons in GP2 followed. with Tung obtaining a reserve drive at Renault F1 in 2009.
Tung decided to move to America in 2011, after it became clear that his progress in Europe had ceased, entering the IndyCar series. He moved to the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia in 2012, before stepping up to full endurance racing in the Asian LeMans Series and, in 2014, the World Endurance Championship.
Formula E History
China Racing approached Tung a few weeks before the start of the 2014/15 Formula E championship, announcing him and Nelson Piquet Jr. as their drivers prior to the 2014 Beijing ePrix. At his home ePrix in Beijing, Tung claimed a disappointing 16th in the race, before claiming eleventh at the following Putrajaya ePrix. His final race came at the 2015 Buenos Aires ePrix, where he claimed eleventh once again, before his prior commitments saw him removed from China Racing's driver line-up for the rest of the season. His contribution to the team was overshadowed by the later performances of Oliver Turvey and Antonio Garcia in the rounds at the end of the season.
Tung would not receive a call up for the 2015/16 season at all, focusing on other series in his native Asia for most of the year. Indeed, it seemed as if Tung's Formula E career was already over, until the Chinese racer was offered a reserve/testing role with the new Jaguar Racing team, who would be making their Formula E bow in the 2016/17 season. Tung accepted, and would attend every round of the third season, ready to take over from Mitch Evans or Adam Carroll if they were unable to race, but ultimately missed out on making a return to FE.
