Maximilian Günther (born 2 July 1997 in Oberstdorf, Germany) is a German racing driver, who competes in the 2022/23 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship with Maserati MSG Racing.[1] Entering his third season of FE having originally driven for GEOX DRAGON during the 2018/19 season, Günther's pre-FE achievements include being twice runner-up in ADAC Formel Masters, top ten finishes in European Formula 3 (including second and third in 2016 and 2017 respectively) and victory at the 2017 Pau Grand Prix.[2]
After a season fighting for two points finishes with Dragon, Günther secured a move to the factory BMW-Andretti team for the 2019/20 season.[3] Partnering factory driver Alexander Sims, Günther would go on to secure two victories for the Bavarian marque, although he would only score points at one more round en-route to ninth in the Championship.[4]
Background[]
Born in Oberstdorf, Günther began his career in karts in 2006, achieving major titles in ADAC branded championships, before moving to single-seaters in 2011 in the Formula BMW Talent Cup, achieving second on debut, and followed that up as twice runner-up of the ADAC Formel Masters Championship.[5]
The European Years[]
In 2015, Günther joined the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Mucke Motorsport and later the Prema Powerteam, competing alongside Felix Rosenqvist, current and future Formula One drivers Charles Leclerc, Lance Stroll and George Russell and other F1-backed names such as Antonio Giovinazzi and Callum Ilott. Gunther achieved his maiden victory at the Norisring and finished eighth in the overall championship.[6]
In 2016, Günther returned for a second season, competing full time with Prema.[7] He achieved four wins and finished vice-champion to teammate Stroll, earning Günther another contract with Prema for a third season in 2017.[8] It was another strong season for the German, with victory at the prestigious Pau Grand Prix, as well as four additional wins, leaving him third behind Lando Norris and Joel Eriksson in the Championship.
In 2017, Günther was named reserve driver for the Mercedes DTM team.[9]
Formula Foundation[]
In August 2017, Günther received sponsorship from the BWT Group, leading to a promotion to the FIA Formula 2 Championship with Arden Interantional.[10][11] Günther would go on to claim one victory in his rookie season, although an offer to join the FIA Formula E Championship saw the German cut-short his stint in F2 to concentrate on his new commitments.[12]
Formula E History[]
In December 2017, Dragon Racing named Günther as one of the drivers they would be bringing to the 2018 Rookie Test in Marrakech, partnering the German racer with Andrea Caldarelli.[13] After finishing in the top five in both sessions, Günther was named as the outfit's reserve driver two months later.[14]
Debut Dreams[]
Following Jérôme d'Ambrosio's departure from Dragon at the end of the 2017/18 season, Günther was seen as the favourite to replace him after becoming the lead test driver for the American outfit alongside José María López.[15] In October 2018, the German racer was duly named as one of the drivers who would drive the number six Dragon car at the Valencia Test sharing the three day test with Ferrari-backed F2 rival Antonio Fuoco.[16] Ultimately, Günther was chosen to partner López for the 2018/19 season, with Fuoco becoming the team's reserve.[12]
Günther's maiden FE campaign began fairly quietly, with the German racer claiming fifteenth at the season opening Ad Diriyah E-Prix.[17] A more competitive run to twelfth followed in Marrakech, only for all of Günther's momentum to be stopped by a failure at the 2019 Santiago E-Prix.[18] Indeed, Dragon would subsequently drop the German racer in favour of Felipe Nasr, although Günther was retained as their test/reserve driver with Nasr expected to miss two rounds before the season was over.[19]
Nasr raced at the following three rounds, before Günther returned for the 2019 Rome E-Prix as Nasr was busy racing in IMSA.[20] Günther would impress on his return, grabbing a slot in Super Pole, although a disappointing race saw the German racer finish down in nineteenth after running out of energy.[20] Yet, his expectations of returning to his development work would not be fulfilled, for Nasr opted to leave the team in order to focus on his IMSA title bid.[21]
With Nasr out of the picture Günther was to race for Dragon through to the end of the season, and duly delivered his best result of the season in Paris, securing fifth place and his maiden points finish.[21] A puncture at the 2019 Monaco E-Prix followed, causing Günther to retire, before a quiet run to fourteenth at his home race in Berlin.[22] Another Super Pole appearance followed in Bern for Günther, with the German racer battling to fifth in the race itself.[23]
A disappoint end to the season saw Günther pick up damage in both of the New York City E-Prix, meaning he failed to add to his tally.[24] He hence finished the campaign in seventeenth in the Championship with 20 points, seventeen more than teammate López.[24]
Beamer Boost: 2019/20[]
In July 2019, Günther partook in a private test with BMW i Andretti Motorsport amid rumours he would be replacing a reportedly DS Techeetah-bound António Félix da Costa.[25][26] In September 2019, the outfit confirmed Günther would race for them in the 2019/20 season.[3]
Andretti's Answer?: 2020/21[]
Günther re-signed with the BMW-Andretti squad ahead of the 2020/21 Formula E World Championship, becoming the team's lead driver as Jake Dennis took over the second seat.[27] Unfortunately for Günther it would be an inauspicious start to the season, with the German racer crashing out of the season opening 2021 Diriyah E-Prix I while running in the midfield.[28] It was then a repeat performance for Günther in the second Diriyah E-Prix, with the #28 BMW this time tangling with Tom Blomqvist to end his race early.[29]
Placed in group four for the 2021 Rome E-Prix I, Günther would manage to get into Super Pole for the third race of the season, although he would start the race down in eleventh due to a penalty he carried over from Diriyah for his Blomqvist collision.[30] A busy race saw Günther fight at the tail end of the points, with the German youth duly scoring his first points of the campaign in ninth place after penalties were applied to other drivers.[30] Another Super Pole appearance would follow in the 2021 Rome E-Prix II, with Günther this time able to fight at the head of the field throughout the race before settling for fifth on the road.[31]
