The Tempelhofring is a temporary street circuit established within Tempelhof Airport in Berlin, Germany, that is used to host the Berlin E-Prix as a round of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. First used in 2015 as the Tempelhof Airport Circuit, the current layout of the Tempelhofring was established in 2017, and has since hosted four E-Prix.
Formula E History
Tempelhof Airport was first proposed as a potential host of the Berlin E-Prix ahead of the inaugural 2014/15 season, with a plan to use the defunct airport approved by the local council in late 2014. The first circuit design was penned by Rodrigo Nunes and christened the Tempelhof Airport Circuit, and would feature a hefty seventeen corners. The circuit was also found to be particularly bumpy due to the concrete surface that formed the former runway, although did feature a fair amount of run-off areas.
The first 2015 Berlin ePrix saw Jérôme d'Ambrosio claim victory, inheriting the win from Lucas di Grassi. For 2016, however, Tempelhof would be unable to host the race, after the German government opted to use the airport as a shelter for refugees during the 2016 Refugee Crisis. The Berlin ePrix hence moved to a new circuit in Karl-Marx-Alley, before FE secured a new deal to return to Tempelhof for the 2017 race.
The return of the Tempelhofring brought about a new circuit design, although this was later revised again to re-position the pitlane and add a kink into one of the corners. The new layout proved popular on its debut, and would be retained for the subsequent Berlin E-Prix in 2018 through to 2020.
There have been two official circuit layouts used at the Tempelhofring.
Tempelhof Airport Circuit (2015)A lap of the Tempelhof Airport Circuit began with a reasonably open right-hand hairpin, bringing the field out from under the Terminal canopy. A small straight with a kink formed turn two, before a tighter hairpin formed turn three. Another short straight followed before the field entered turn four, a left-hand hairpin, before weaving their way through an extended turn five to hit the brakes for turn six, another left-hand hairpin-esque corner.
Turn seven appeared as an open left-hander, before turns eight and nine ran together to form a multi-apex right hand sweep. A short straight followed before the field hit the brakes for turn ten, a left-hand hairpin, followed by a kink to form turn eleven. Turns twelve and thirteen formed a tight right-left chicane that brought the field back under the terminal canopy.
Another chicane, this time a left-right combination followed to form turns fourteen and fifteen, before another right-left chicane brought the field back onto the start/finish straight. Pit-in was located on the outside of turn sixteen.
Tempelhofring (2017 - Present)
The revised layout for the Tempelhofring began once again with the field close to the Terminal building, although the long-curving start/finish "straight" does not pass under the canopy. The field subsequently hits the brakes for the first corner, a long, open, left-hand corner that runs through almost 270°, which is instantly followed by a tight 90° right. Another 90° right follows to form three, before the field blast through the Allianz eVillage, passing directly under the eVillage's tent.
After blasting through the fans the field hit the brakes to take turn four, a hairpin-esque left, before a kink at turn five carries the field onto the long back-straight. A small kink towards the end of the straight forms the entry to turn six, providing multiple lines through the left-hand hairpin, before a long curve tightens to form turn seven, another left. Turn eight follows as little more than a right-hand kink, before the field charge into turn nine, a right-hand hairpin.
A curving "straight" follows out of turn nine, before an open left-hand hairpin forms turn ten, bringing the field back onto the start/finish straight. The Attack Mode activation point is found on the outside of turn six, while pit-in is found on the inside of turn ten.
