Tom Blomqvist, born 30 November 1993, is an Anglo-Swedish racing driver, who made his debut during the 2017/18 FIA Formula E Championship for MS&AD Andretti Formula E.[1] Blomqvist, the son of rallying legend Stig Blomqvist, tested for Andretti during the 2017 Valencia Test, and is a member of the BMW driver programme.[1]
Blomqvist would have a fairly quiet debut season in the FE Championship, only completing half of the 2017/18 season's races before being called away to compete in the World Endurance Championship.[2] He would subsequently be replaced at Andretti for the 2018/19 season by fellow BMW factory ace Alexander Sims.[3]
Background
After several years in go-karting from the age of 10, Blomqvist started racing cars in 2009, racing in the Swedish version of the Formula Renault Championship.[4] His campaign ended with the Brit taking third place in the final standings, with occasional appearances in the British Formula Renault Championship.[4] He opted to compete in the British version full time in 2010, a move which resulted in him becoming the youngest ever winner of the Championship.[4]
DTM Dreams
British Formula One team McLaren began tracking Blomqvist's progress from that moment onwards, signing him up to their Driver Development Programme in 2012.[5] He celebrated this with a rookie campaign in the Formula 3 Euro Series, a season that finished with him in seventh overall.[4] A similar campaign followed in 2013, before Blomqvist finally fulfilled his promise in 2014.[4] Six victories saw Blomqvist end the season as runner-up, and prompted attention from BMW and their DTM campaign.[6]
Blomqvist's maiden DTM campaign would go fairly well, the Brit scoring a maiden victory towards the end of the season on his way to fourteenth in the series.[5] His second season saw him run stronger across the season without claiming a win, although numerous podium finishes allowed Blomqvist to finish in the top six in the Championship.[5] However, Blomqvist's third season would not go well at all, the Brit only claiming a few points finishes to scrape into the top twenty come season's end.[5]
Formula E History
Blomqvist's first involvement with Formula E came at the 2017 Valencia Test, when the Brit was invited by contract owners BMW to test for the Andretti Formula E effort, with whom the German car manufacturer had partnered ahead of their full entry in 2018/19.[7] Blomqvist would be competing with fellow Brit and BMW contractee Alexander Sims for the second Andretti seat, and after three days of running it was the Anglo-Swede performed best.[8] However, Andretti were reluctant to reveal whom they had picked for their second seat alongside António Félix da Costa, with Blomqvist only revealed as their second driver upon the release of the full 2017/18 FIA Formula E Championship entry list.[1]
Blomqvist would have to wait until the Marrakech E-Prix to make his full FE debut, with Kamui Kobayashi using his cars in Hong Kong.[9] Regardless, Blomqvist's Marrakech debut would be an impressive one, with the Anglo-Swede outpacing teammate da Costa, before recording eighth place after a race long battle with Maro Engel and Alex Lynn.[10] The Brit would again battle for points in Santiago, but ultimately fall shy, before a disappointing display in Mexico City left Blomqvist down in fifteenth.[11]
Indeed, Blomqvist's pace seemed to evaporate as the season progressed, with the Brit failing to score at all for the rest of the season. Ultimately, Blomqvist would be pulled from the Andretti team after retiring from the Paris E-Prix with damage, BMW deciding his time would be better spent in their WEC campaign.[2] Stéphane Sarrazin therefore replaced him, but likewise failed to score for the rest of the campaign.[2]
Ultimately, Blomqvist would miss out on a spot in the factory BMW squad for 2018/19, with the Bavarian manufacturer choosing Blomqvist's compatriot Alexander Sims to partner da Costa, with Blomqvist taking Sims' drive in the IMSA Weathertech Series.[3]
